Review the following information or have students complete a research project:

  • Childhood: Born in Yorba Linda, California on January 9, 1913
  • Education: Whittier College
  • Early Career: Lawyer; Attorney for U.S. Office of Emergency Management, 1942; Member of U.S. House of Representatives, 1947-51; United States Senator, 1951-53; Vice President, 1953-61 (under Eisenhower).
  • Nickname: Tricky Dick
  • Political Party: Republican
  • Presidential Term: 37th President - Began on January 20, 1969 (56 years old) and ended on August 9, 1974, when he resigned to avoid impeachment after Watergate
  • Death: Severe stroke and blood clot on April 22, 1994 (81 years old)
  • Presidential Accomplishment and Historical Events:
    • Nixon Shock: Abandon Gold Standard by taking a series of measures that canceled the direct convertibility of the United States dollar to gold.
    • 90 Day Wage Freeze: Extended executive authority to impose restraints on wages, prices, salaries, and rents to counter inflation.
    • Environmental Agency, Clean Air & Water Act & Endangered Species Act
    • Vietnamization: Withdrawing U.S. troops and transferring responsibility of war effort to South Vietnam.
    • Nixon Doctrine: U.S. would supply arms but not military forces to its allies in Asia (1969).
    • Salt Treaty I: The first Strategic Arms Limitation Talk (SALT) was one of two treaties between the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the Cold War (1972) to agree to each have only one antiballistic missile.
    • Detente: Release of tensions between U.S. and Soviet Union during the Cold War.
    • Moon Landing: Oversaw Apollo Moon Landing on July 20, 1969
  • Important Quotes:
    • When the President does it, that means that it is not illegal.
    • People have got to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I'm not a crook. I earned everything I've got.
    • If you want to make beautiful music, you must play the black and the white notes together.
  • WATERGATE SCANDAL
    • McCord and four men on the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP) broke into the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate hotel-office building in Washington, D.C. They were caught searching files and planting recording devices.
    • Five days later, Nixon denied any knowledge of or role in the scandal.
    • McCord and the men were found guilty and McCord claimed Nixon and White House officials knew about the break-in and paid the defendants to lie or hide the truth during the trial.
    • John Dean, a White House lawyer agreed Nixon was part of the cover-up.
    • Key documents linking Nixon to the cover-up were destroyed and his administration had illegally wiretapped the critical journalists and the opposing party's phones.
    • Six of Nixon's advisors were convicted for trying to prevent the investigation.
    • Nixon continued to deny his involvement.
    • Nixon's "secret tapes" or his routine recordings of conversations in his office were discovered.
    • Nixon refused to turn over the tapes, and when he did, some were missing or destroyed.
    • The tapes proved Nixon had been part of the cover-up.
    • The House Judiciary Committee approved his impeachment for obstruction of justice.
    • Nixon resigned and announced on television, “I have always tried to do what is best for the nation.”
