Getting Started

Review the poem's background information with students:

  • Despite differences in culture, beliefs and political views, Latin-Americans are united through their ancestral ties and their shared experience as immigrants in the United States. Judith Ortiz Cofer is a Puerto Rican poet who spent her childhood in New Jersey. In 1993, Cofer wrote The Latin Deli: An Ars Poetica, using a Deli scene to highlight how various Latin-Americans share similar experiences while also being distinctly unique.

Opening Discussion

  1. Ask students to analyze the title.
  2. Ask students to predict what the poem will be about based on the title and what they know about "Latin Delis".
  3. As a class, read Judith Ortiz Cofer's poem, The Latin Deli: An Ars Poetica, aloud two times (available online).
