Schedule Boards

Step 1Class discussion with students

Getting Started

A schedule board uses images and simple text to outline events, steps or tasks of the class, day or week. Schedule boards are an effective tool for students with cognitive, learning or executive functioning disabilities. Schedule boards can be displayed at the front of a classroom or they can be displayed or stored on individual student desks, binders or planners. The same symbols or images should be used again and again to develop consistency and smooth transitions.

  • Agenda: Schedule boards can display a weekly, daily or class schedule or agenda.
  • First, Then: For students who may be overwhelmed by an entire day’s activities a "First, Then" schedule board only shows two activities, the current and subsequent activity.
  • Life Events: Schedule boards can also be used to help students mentally prepare for a future event such as a field trip, doctors visit, interview, awards ceremony, etc.
  • Daily Routines: Schedule boards can also be used to help students understand and remember the steps involved with daily routines such as bathroom trips, snack time, personal hygiene, etc.

Opening Discussion

Introduce the relevant uses of schedule boards to your students:

  • Class schedule boards display the class period agenda of activities.
  • Daily schedule boards display the daily agenda of activities, transitions or class periods.
  • Weekly schedule boards display the electives, events or due dates of the week.
  • First, Then schedule boards only show two activities, the current and upcoming activity.
