Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

Step 1Class discussion with students

Before your students read Romeo and Juliet, introduce them to the play by discussing the major themes:

  • Fate
  • Love
  • The Meaning of Gender

Ask your class, “What is the meaning of love?” Organize their ideas by drawing a mind map on the board. Teen readers especially connect with the theme of love in Romeo and Juliet, because they're often experiencing the high and lows of love for the first time.

A lot of students will consider Shakespeare outdated and irrelevant. Introduce your students to movies that are loosely based on Shakespeare's plays. For example, "West Side Story" / "Romeo and Juliet", "The Lion King" / "Hamlet", "10 Things I Hate About You" / "Taming of the Shrew", and "She’s The Man" / "Twelfth Night."

Draw a T-chart to compare and contrast characteristics that represent masculinity and femininity. Ask students what it means to be masculine or feminine in:

  • How have our views changed?
  • How have they remained the same?

Step 3Concluding discussion with students

The play Romeo and Juliet has a tragic ending that many teens can relate to. It also has dark undertones that relate to suicide and murder.

It's important to discuss how teens can manage romance and conflict in their daily lives. Suicide is a serious topic and should be addressed with your class. Create an open discussion in which the class can share their ideas on the topic, or have the students write a paragraph on whether suicide is an acceptable decision.

The characteristics that make up the protagonist and antagonist help shape the outcome of the narrative. Shakespearean plays are known for their “Foil Characters” whose main values differ from that of the protagonist.

Instructions

Choose three of your favorite characters from Romeo and Juliet and create a Character Map for each one.

  • Make sure to include a protagonist and a foil character among your selection.
  • It's important to add sufficient detail to all the parts of the map.
  • Include an appropriate illustration based on the character's attributes that are outlined in the play.

Dramatic Structure for Romeo and Juliet by Student
ExpositionA longstanding feud between the Montagues and Capulets continues with a brawl between servants. Romeo is convinced to give up his quest for Rosaline and find another. Romeo sneaks into the Capulet ball and meets Juliet for the first time. Main ConflictRomeo and Juliet exchange vows of love and ask Friar Lawrence to marry them. Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel, however, Romeo is reluctant. Mercutio steps in and accepts the challenge, but is killed and dies in Romeo’s arms. Romeo kills Tybalt to avenge his friend's death. Rising ActionJuliet devises a plan with Friar Lawrence. She will take a sleeping potion to trick her family into thinking she is dead, so that she will no longer have to marry Paris. To disguise her plan, Juliet agrees to marry Paris tomorrow. Juliet takes the potion that night and Friar Lawrence sends the messenger. ClimaxJuliet is found dead the next morning and word spreads of her death. The messenger is unable to reach Romeo due to a plague. Romeo soon hears about Juliet’s death and is distraught with sadness. Later that night as he approaches Juliets grave, he comes across Paris whom he kills in a battle. Romeo returns to Juliet's side and drinks a bottle of poison to join Juliet in the afterlife. Falling ActionThe Friar and Juliet arrive to see Romeo dead. Juliet is unable to live without Romeo and stabs herself with Romeo’s dagger. DenouementThe families find Romeo and Juliet dead. Their death finally brings a conclusion to the feud between the two families.

Conflict and Plot in “Cinderella” by Pixton
ExpositionCinderella lives a humble life with her father, and is very happy. However, soon after taking a new wife, Cinderella's father passes away. Main ConflictWith her new husband now deceased, Lady Tremaine and her two daughters take over the house. Rather than welcoming Cinderella into the family, they make her a servant and treat her cruelly. Rising ActionThe Prince, looking to get married, announces there will be a ball for all the ladies in the kingdom to attend. Cinderella plans to go but her stepsisters ruin her dress. As she sits in tears, her fairy godmother appears and gives her everything she needs for a grand experience at the ball. But there is a catch; at midnight, everything will return to how it was before. ClimaxCinderella enters the ballroom and immediately catches Prince Charming's eye. After a night of dancing, the two are in love. Cinderella loses track of time, however, and when the clock strikes midnight, she flees from the ball. Prince Charming is left with nothing but her glass slipper. Falling ActionThe prince is determined to find the mysterious woman from the ball. He sends his men to visit every household in the kingdom and have them try on the glass slipper. The woman whom the shoe fits will be the new princess. DenouementAt last, Cinderella gets a chance to try on the glass slipper and it fits perfectly. Prince Charming knows she is the one he fell in love with at the ball. He rescues her from her wicked stepfamily and they live happily ever after.
