Step 1Class discussion with students

Manners and etiquette are social guidelines that need to be followed in a society. In the United States, it is proper etiquette to open the door for the person behind you. Every culture has their own unique set of manners that may differ from country to country. For example, in Japan, people will bow as a sign of respect, or in Europe, it is common to give a kiss on both cheeks to say hello. Create a list of manners that are followed in the United States and compare them to those that are followed in the Middle East.

Some Middle Eastern manners are:

  • Women must wear a headscarf
  • No public displays of affection
  • Thumbs-up is an offensive gesture
  • Displaying the sole of your foot is offensive
  • Respect your elders
  • No drinking alcohol in public

    Create an informative Poster about the history of Palestine and the conflicts that have occurred between the Jewish and Arab states since its formation.

    Using a blank map of Central Asia, students will label 10 countries, five landforms, and two bodies of water. Near the bottom of the page, 10 facts will be listed about the region.

Step 3Concluding discussion with students

Explore the history of Palestine since the British Partition Plan of 1947. Discuss the migration of tens of thousands of European Jews to Palestine; the flight of about 650,000 Arabs from Israel during its War of Independence in 1948; and the flight of more than 800,000 Jews in Arab countries to Israel after 1948.
