Everyman Hero

Step 1Class discussion with students

Getting Started

Ask students to infer what they believe an "everyman" hero might be. The everyman hero is an ordinary person with ordinary capabilities who is thrown into extraordinary circumstances where they are forced to act heroically. They often have strong morals and the desire to act selflessly to help those in need. Unlike the classical hero who is almost too brave, talented, or perfect to be believable, the audience can easily relate to and identify with the everyman hero. They aren't noticeably flawed like the antihero or tragic hero, but they have an ordinary balance of strengths and weaknesses. Most realistic fiction features an everyman hero. Examples include Huckleberry Finn, Marty McFly, Bilbo Baggins, Ron Weasley, and Atticus Finch.

Opening Discussion

Introduce the characteristics of the everyman hero:

  1. Ordinary person: The audience can relate to the normal strengths and weaknesses of this character.
  2. Extraordinary circumstances: The ordinary protagonist is pushed into a situation that requires their heroic action.
  3. Compassionate: The hero's sense of human understanding and compassion drives their heroic action.
  4. Stands up for beliefs: The hero stands up for what is right, staying committed to upholding values in the face of adversity.

Step 3Concluding discussion with students

Discuss the following:

  • Why might readers prefer to read about an everyman hero rather than another type of hero?
  • Do you know any real-life heroes from history or current events? What makes them an everyman hero?
  • Do you think most heroes start out as "ordinary" people, or do most heroes have uncommon talents or strengths? Explain your reasoning.
