Yes of course we can

Miss, can you read the story of Mr Higgings on his farm?

Well Mr Higgings was farming on his hill farm in the Lake District, and recently he found he was struggling to cope with funding for his farm.

What am I suposed to do son,? I can barely afford any of the feed, and all the prices for sheep and milk have fallen

Well it says here that your entitled for help from CAP

Whats that?

It says that it's an European wide policy called the Common Agricultural Policy for farming

It's aims are to make farmers grow more food.

But how can I make more food if I have nowhere to sell it?

I'm not sure about this, how successful was it?

It also says here that they have a guaranteed market and grants to farmers.

It says it was successful for farmers who used this scheme

Ok, I have followed the CAP scheme and it's great. I can now have more sheep meaning more profits.

SEVERAL YEARS LATER...

But Dad, have you not heard that problems have occured, such as too much food being produced?

I'm sure it will be fine, I can't cut down now I have such great buisness.

I don't think you will have a choice, it says on the news that they're bringing in "quotas".

What's that?

It's a restiction on how many animals you can have on your farm.

But it's not all bad news, there's extra money for hill farmers in places like the Lake District, It's called Less Favoured Area Status.

Well that will be fine then.

Yes, but theres one more problem.

I wouldn't of guessed.

Well we're being forced to take 10% off land out of production. But we can use it for something else! Maybe we can grow some trees for diversification?

Son, I just don't think we can do this anymore!

ANOTHER YEAR LATER...

Yes sure we can, but guess what Dad...

What now?

Yet another policy has been put into action!

Well the goverment have realised that this scheme is not such a good idea. It's really expensive. Also they can't stop the policy because French farmers are burning their sheep whenever the goverment decides they should do something!!

Yikes!

So what am I supposed to do now?

Well it's not that bad because they're not getting rid of the policy altogether. They're just bringing in a new policy called " Single Farm Payment".

Oh yes, I heard about this. Where one cheque per year will be given to farmers to cover all grants. And you only get the grant if you fill out a complicated form.

That's right!

But also there's a thing called Countryside Stewardship. We only get our money if we look after the countryside. For example creating a lake, re-planting hedges, restoring old buildings and maybe even incorprating a flower meadow.

I think I finally get it!

The End

Good proofreading of original, with improvements in grammar.
