Not much.

So how much time does Barnard's Star buy us?

It'll take forty-nine minutes to get there.

...And bring us about twenty minutes closer to where we think the drones are.

Which technically buys us about five days.

But the change in direction means the drones won't come for a look at Earth.

So... it's been a thousand years since the ship tried using decoys. The drones figured out how to tell the difference at range, so they only send one drone to deal with a decoy. Can we use that?

Give the decoys shields.

And weapons.

Are we sure it's just us and the drones out here?

No. We'd have to be very, very careful what the decoy could do with those weapons.

If it shoots at 'em, they shoot back.

If the decoys are programmed with a course, regular stops and a "return fire" protocol...

Right enough, the drones will shoot first and ask questions never.

They'd only get two stops before the drones adapted and sent enough to wipe them out.

Buck-ton. Heh heh. Hey, where *is* Buck?

Then we need a literal Buck-ton of 'em.

And each needs to be able to take on at least ten drones without losing shields.

That's a lot of power. If we built something the size of the Krelax drones, it could probably do that twice at most without being recharged.

Then we need to build them to recharge like the ship does.

The Gaters will love that.

So how does the ship recharge?

The exotic matter ring that we use to project warp fields also absorbs the radiation photons from collisions.

...and there's something else that emits *lots* of those photons.

An hour later...

Do you enjoy reading this comic as much as I enjoy creating it? I want to keep creating it. But I'm now unemployed and just sunk some £600 I couldn't spare because the computer I built ten years ago died on the operating table the day episode 9 was published.

Maybe you'd like to help out and earn awesome rewards (and special extras) by sponsoring the comic on Patreon?

Yup, hopefully not long! Just waiting for the new hard drive from a friend and then I can install Win7 and get going...
Buck is someone on a community site I use, who follows the comic - the three characters on that panel are all based on other people from the site, so I couldn't resist the reference ;-)
