A true story by NiereNione

Long ago and far away, I had four best friends:

An animal lover,

and a writer.

an artist,

a ballerina,

I was the Crafter.

We had many things in common.

We were all home schooled.

We were all raised in strict religious households.

And we all LOVED The Lord Of The Rings.

We read all of Tolkien's books, even the more obscure ones.

We saw the Peter Jackson movies over and over.

Allinde Palannólis

We learned the Elvish languages, and gave ourselves elf names.

We taught ourselves to sew, and made medieval "elf" gowns and tunics.

Sure, we were nerds who loved fantasy and creativity in general.

But there was a deeper, driving need behind our seemingly silly obsession.

Each of us hid a painful secret.

Our seemingly happy families were troubled and dysfunctional, and we felt like we had no place to go, no way to get help.

When you're home schooled, there are no guidance counselors or teachers to assist when your brother is suicidal and your father refuses to get him therapy.

When your family is deeply involved in a church, you don't want to air your dirty laundry by reporting an abusive parent.

We shoved the hurt deep down inside, and retreated into a fantasy world. There, we were in control and free from the everyday things that made us feel so helpless.

We even made online message boards where we could write fan fiction and stories about our elven alter egos.

When you're only sixteen, you don't know what to do when your parents' marriage is broken and your family is hurting.

Who do you talk to when your adopted special needs brother takes up all your parents' time and energy?

And how do you live with a controlling parent who humiliates you and makes you ashamed of your own body?

We didn't even tell each other about our problems.

Instead, we all became someone else; creating characters and worlds within worlds.

The animal lover became Airétalathwen - a romantic wood elf and keeper of the royal hounds.

The ballerina became Aranel - a fair light elf known for her dancing and music.

The artist became Luinwilwarin - a wood elf who protected the forest by beating evildoers with her staff.

The writer became Allinde Palannólis - a silent gray elf scout and wanderer.

And the crafter became Niere Teleliniel - a high elf healer and apothecary.

We threw elaborate parties as often as possible.

We romped through the woods behind my house in our costumes.

We staged all kinds of photo ops.

And through our silliness and obsession, we gained a sort of healing.

It wasn't until years later that we finally opened up to each other about our family problems.

It was cleansing and cathartic to be honest about the pain that drove us to live in a fantasy world.

We all had the similar reaction of, "If I had only known you were hurting!"

And as we moved on with our lives, we also reached back through time to embrace and console the girls we used to be - the grieving teenagers still inside of us.

Now we have moved on to different jobs, different states, and different lives. But every so often, we still unite in memory of the time when we were elves.

Thanks. It was hard to write, but I don't want anyone else going through the same thing to feel alone.

Aww! I'm homeschooled too. I don't have any friends though, which kind of sucks. :( Luckily my family life is awesome! We're going through some stressful stuff right now though, so I go to my own world often as well.

I'm glad your family is a healthy environment! I think dysfunctional families damage people regardless of where their kids go to school. Being homeschooled isn't all bad though; I'm really close to my three siblings as a result.
