The East India Company is a British trade company. Their first trade was in 1608

The EIC wanted to trade with India for their cotton, silk, indigo dye, tea, and opium. The EIC then traded their own product for them.

The Indian mutiny began as a mutiny of the Indian soldiers (sepoys) recruited by the East India Company's army

The East India Company's soldiers was used to protect the traders. They then soon named themselves the peacekeepers of India and they soon took over India with their army

The British officers who led the Sepoys mistreated them and were insensitive towards their beliefs

When the 1853 rifle was introduced, the sepoys had had enough

They discovered that the main ingredient used to seal the cartridges was fat from a cow or a pig

Cows where sacred to Hindus and Pigs were considered unclean to Muslims

In May 1857, several sepoys refused to used the rifle and were jailed

A few days later, their comrades freed them and killed he British Officers

The revolt or mutiny had begun

The rebel forces grew in number and spreaded across Northern India

The rebels laid seige to British Garrisons at Delhi, Lucknow, Cawnpore and other cities

Battles were fought by both sides

Delhi was soon taken by the rebels and the Mughal Emperor was put back in power

In June, the British quickly put together a force 9000 men, up against 30000 rebels

In mid-September the British attacked Delhi and for the next few weeks, the city was a scene of vicious street fighting

Amazingly, the British eventually took Delhi back

But Cawnpore had fallen in June but the garrison had taken up positions outside the city

Nana Sahib, a deposed nobleman who led the rebellion, offered the garrison safe passage to the town of Allahabad by boat

The garrison accepted but upon entering the boats, the rebels betrayed them and fired on them

The surviving men, women and children where executed and had their bodies thrown into a nearby well

When the British found out, they carried out a punishment for the rebels and the natives

Prisoners were forced to lick the blood off the walls of where the survivors were killed

Prisoners were also force fed pork, which was against their belief

Others were hung or blown apart by cannons

These lasted for months, the Indian people called this time 'The Devil's Wind'

In July, the rebels fled Cawnpore and the British took control but a small force of rebel men marched to Lucknow and began taking back the city

A month later the main garrison arrived under the command of Sir Colin Campbell

Sir Colin Campbell then took his troops back to Cawnpore to aid the garrison there

They used guns to their advantage and defeated the Indian troops

The Indian Mutiny was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the Victorian Era

The East India Company was abbolished and control of India was handed over to the British Government
