Top 10 Stress Busters for Principals

Monday January 9, 2017

The role of Principal is all care and all responsibility - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To do their job well, Principals must pay attention to their health and wellbeing.

Sounds good to me!

Reducing stress has a positive impact on health and wellbeing. Start practising the following stress busting tips and you - and your school - will soon reap the benefits!

Let's start in your office. Remember, your DIARY is your BEST FRIEND.

I've been replaced by a DIARY????

Tip #2. Keep appointments to 30 minutes.

Tip #1. Block out annual or other leave well in advance.

Tip #3. Schedule time for lunch every day.

And a personal tip from me: Sleep is a great stress buster, so schedule in some early nights, too.

And take it from me, no screen time for one hour before bed time helps us all get to sleep faster.

Back to the office for Tip #4: TAME YOUR TECHNOLOGY!

When you have important documents to read or write, turn off email alerts, put your mobile phone on silent and ask your PA to hold calls, just as you would if you were attending an appointment.

What? No pets?

Extend the same courtesy to your family at meal times or whenever your full attention is critical.

These routine disciplines are a form of mindfulness that will increase your efficiency and enhance your enjoyment of tasks and personal interactions.

There are 3 simple management techniques that also help reduce stress: DECLINE, DEFER and DELEGATE.

Tip #5: DECLINE.

Learn to say 'NO' to professional and personal invitations when the stress will outweigh the benefits.

Stay home and walk the dog!

Tip #6: DEFER: Prioritise no more than three tasks to tackle on any one working day. You are more likely to experience a sense of achievement and less likely to feel the weight of an immovable burden.

I can fetch balls!

Tip #7: DELEGATE: Reduce your administrative burden – and broaden the experience of aspiring leaders – by delegating tasks that can be adequately covered under your supervision.

Tip #8: Schedule time for physical and intellectual pursuits.

Hmm..Rook 3 to Bishop 5?

Tip #9: Take care of important relationships and feed your soul.

You forgot to mention the benefits of pet therapy!

And Tip #10? Call on your AHISA colleagues! They will understand your challenges as no one else can.
